Adaptive Multi-Paddock Grazing
Isn’t that a mouthful?
But no worries! Let’s break it down Adaptive Multi-Paddock Grazing – usually just called AMP for short – is a kind of rotational grazing that relies less on set schedules and more on observation. It’s still a relatively new approach for me but I’ve got some great examples, people much further along in their experience that I’m learning from.
This is where you’re going to find all our AMP-related information that’s specific to OUR farm, OUR animals and OUR conditions. Wherever I can, I will link to additional resources that live in our Keeping archive. I hope you’ll find it interesting and helpful!
Grazing Pod Assessment Content Guide – Because I had to start somewhere. This is a document that lays out what I’m looking for, how I’m measuring (the metrics) and why it matters.
Rank-Grass Intervention Flowchart – this is a tool I use in the Big Pasture, the L Pastures and other zones where we have a lot of tame (as in non-native) grasses like Timothy, Kentucky Bluegrass and Smooth Brome. This grass heads out early and is best used closer to the beginning of the grazing season here at the homestead.
The Fenceline Monitoring Checklist. Part of being in a commons is understanding that different people make different choices. What happens on the other side of the fence may have impacts however and observing and understanding these impacts is an important tool.
Those are some of the basic tools I use, along with a camera, two eyeballs and two feet. As my Mum, Jo Ann the Splendid tells me (over and over, bless her) “Tara, there’s nothing like looking for finding something.”
Below are the final grazing assessment reports for 2025.
